Recovering data from encrypted hard drives

data encryptionThere are various ways of safeguarding data through the use of encryption. One way is to ‘lock’ the hard drive from being used until a password is entered eg. by using an ATA command to encrypt a hard drive. Another method is to install a program that encrypts the data on the drive. Retrieving files from encrypted hard drives is the work of specialist data recovery companies such as Data Clinic Ltd, who are experienced specialists in all forms of hard drive recovery.

Question: I have a ata password locked ssd and I’d like to know if you guys can help me unlock it. I dont need the data on the drive.

Answer: An ATA password locked hard drive requires unlocking by the use of commands that interface directly with the hard drive. Thus, it’s usually necessary to go to the hard drive manufacturers themselves or a good quality data recovery company like Data Clinic Ltd in order to get the hard drive’s ATA password removed.

Have tried using other lead and other Mac but still no joy.

Question: I have a SSD HDD from a laptop that is encrypted with McAfee Endpoint and not recognizable when booting from the laptop. Can I send it to you to see if you can get the data off?

Answer: McAfee Endpoint is a hard drive encryption program that seeks to safeguard data by encrypting it on the hard drive. The data can only be read by decrypting the hard drive with a digital ‘key’. If this key becomes lost or is forgotten there is very little chance of the data being decrypted, even by a data recovery company.

Note: Encryption is used to safeguard data so if you are going to encrypt it, either by using an ATA password or by the use of a program like McAfee Endpoint, then make sure you don’t lose the password.

Black screen, nothing coming up

Here are a few questions I’ve received about what to do when your computer won’t boot, or when you switch it on and nothing comes up. Try these and if you have a problem similar to what I’ve described, you can get in touch if you need further help.

blank screen pc wont boot

I was on my computer last night and the following morning I booted it up and the screen was black. I took it to a repair store and they found that it was corrupt. I need all the data on there otherwise I will fail my A level as it has all of my Final work on there. I should have known to back it up. I was just wondering how much it would cost for it to be recovered with all the data. I live in the North West or England and my nearest cities are around Greater Manchester and Stockport.

I dropped my hard drive and now it won’t connect to my computer. I have a lot of important information on there so wanted to find out if it is recoverable?
